As long as the dampening and compression is set properly with the shock it wouldn't matter much if the shock is straight up and down or if was angled. The angle allows for more clearance when compressed since it somewhat moves out of it's way more to allow more travel. So the dampening and compression would just need to compensate for a slower movement that is shorter and it would still perform. What it sounds like is happening, is the outer tubes, are bent, or are bowing enough to where there is enough play for the inner tube to move, and skip gears. That would cause gears to strip, and pull teeth.

This is a mostly complete kit that has everything you need from the disc brakes to the brake lines and actuator.
